Jails

According to Through The Kenora Gateway, a jail was built from logs in Rat Portage as early as 1871. This jail was built on the east side of main st south of Second St South. One operated by the Province of Manitoba was built accross the street on the west side of Main St. By 1890 a firehall, police station jail and municipal offices was built on the West Side of Manitoba on the site of the laterday library. A combination court and provincial jail was built on the north-east corner of Matheson St. and First Street North by the same 1890. This building subsequent becam the Armoury (at least by 1984).subsequently the current Provincial jain was built by the shore of Laurenson's Lake.
