Conflict Between Religion and State
Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis refused to issue a marriage license to individuals who qualified in the face of Directions from the state to issue license and in the face of a United States Court ruling that such marriages were legal. She claimed that she refused on the basis of "God's law. The individuals indicated that she was not in a church, that the issueing authority was a civil institution and that she did not have the right to substitute her views in place of the Supreme Court. She was held in contempt and went to jail.
